A Queensland male youth was arrested and charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) today, with offences of accessing, possessing and procuring child abuse material.

During search warrants conducted this morning at the minor's residential address, AFP officers found several thousand child abuse video files and images.

AFP Commissioner Tony Negus and Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor today launched a national rollout of the school-based cyber safety program, ThinkUKnow. ThinkUKnow is a key prevention campaign that aims to educate parents, carers and teachers about the risks faced online and how to create a safe online experience for young people.

AFP National Manager High Tech Crime Operations Neil Gaughan said part of assisting children and teens to stay safe and have fun online, is to educate parents, carers and teachers so they are better informed about the internet and understand what their children and teens are doing online.

In its work to help prevent such crimes, the AFP encourages parents, teachers and carers to talk to their children about the internet and the risks that come with it, Assistant Commissioner Gaughan said.

“Doing simple things, like having the family computer in the living room instead of in a child’s bedroom, will go a long way in helping create a safe experience.”

The minor has been charged with the following offences:

•Using a carriage service to access child pornography material, contrary to section 474.19 (a)(i) of the Criminal Code Act 1995
•Using a carriage service to make available child pornography material, contrary to section 474.19 (a)(iv) of the Criminal Code Act 1995,and
•Possessing child exploitation material, contrary to section 228D of the Criminal Code 1899 (QLD)
